Extreme speeding fines rise to €1,300, e-scooters are largely banned from pavements and new rules apply to phone use at pedestrian crossings.
An amendment to the Road Traffic Act comes into force in September, bringing several changes that will affect more than just motorists.
Penalties for the most serious speeding offences will become tougher. Drivers who exceed the speed limit by more than 50 km/h in a built-up area or more than 60 km/h outside one will face on-the-spot fines of between €500 and €1,000, up from €250–€800. Fines imposed in administrative proceedings will range from €800 to €1,300.
Penalties for less serious speeding offences will remain unchanged. Exceeding the limit by up to 20 km/h in a built-up area or up to 30 km/h outside one carries a fine of up to €50 on the spot or €100 in administrative proceedings.
Drivers who exceed the limit by 21–50 km/h in a built-up area or 31–60 km/h outside one face an on-the-spot fine of up to €400 or a fine of up to €600 in administrative proceedings.
