At least four people including a young child have been killed and over 50 injured after the US resumed strikes against Iran on Tuesday. According to the Iranian Red Crescent, shrapnel from a US missile attack hit a residential home where a wedding was taking place in the coastal city of Kuhestak, in Sirik county of Hormozgan province. The United States has yet to comment on the incident.
It comes several hours after the US military announced it was launching strikes on Iran, quashing hopes that an exchange of fire last weekend might not presage a wider renewal of hostilities. US Central Command said it was striking targets in Iran over attempted attacks on shipping and against US service members in the region. Explosions were reported in several locations across southern Iran.
Donald Trump warned that if Iran retaliated against the US’s latest strikes, “they will be hit again at a much harder and higher level, but it will not be the biggest attack of them all, that is waiting in the wings and, when it is over, there will be very little left of the Islamic Republic of Iran.” That very ominous last part is starkly reminiscent of threats Trump has made in the past that could amount to war crimes if carried out. He added that the strikes were “in retaliation” for Iran’s “failed attempt” to lay mines in the strait of Hormuz and for Iran’s (retaliatory) attacks on the US military base in Jordan (which were intercepted).
