The US labor market just sent another distress signal. The July 2026 Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey, released September 1 by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, showed 7.271 million open positions, landing below consensus estimates that ranged from 7.33 to 7.36 million.
The numbers behind the worry
July’s 7.271 million openings tell a story of gradual erosion, not collapse. The more alarming detail is what happened to June’s data: originally reported at 7.359 million, it was revised down by 177,000 to just 7.182 million. That revision marks the largest downward adjustment since 2025.
Hires held steady at roughly 5.1 million in July, and total separations matched that figure. Quits fell to 3.056 million, translating to a 1.9% quits rate.
