Google just locked in 396 MW of geothermal power from Fervo Energy’s Cape Station project in Beaver County, Utah, with an option to buy even more. Deliveries are set to begin in 2028, and if the deal sounds massive, that’s because it is: this is Fervo’s largest power agreement to date.

The arrangement is designed to feed a Google data center in Utah, though it still needs to clear community input and regulatory approvals. For a company racing to keep its AI infrastructure humming without torching the planet, geothermal offers something wind and solar can’t: power that runs 24/7, rain or shine, calm or gale.

What Cape Station actually is

Fervo’s Cape Station isn’t your grandmother’s geothermal plant. It uses enhanced geothermal systems, or EGS, which borrow horizontal drilling and reservoir stimulation techniques from the oil and gas industry to tap heat deep underground, even in areas without natural hot springs or geysers.

Fervo has poured more than $2 billion into Cape Station. The phased buildout targets roughly 100 MW of capacity operational by early 2027, scaling up to approximately 500 MW by 2028. The 396 MW Google is buying represents the lion’s share of that total output, which tells you how central this single customer relationship is to Fervo’s business model.
