The price of cement in Nigeria has risen by about 329 percent from around N3,500 per 50kg bag in 2021 to as high as N15,000 in 2026, despite excess production capacity, raising fresh concerns over the cost of housing and construction.
The sharp increase in cement prices is evident in the market’s price trajectory over the past five years.
A 50kg bag of cement, which sold for about N3,300–N3,500 in 2021, rose to around N4,600 in 2022 and N5,000 in 2023. Prices climbed further to between N7,500 and N8,500 in 2024 before reaching N9,500–N10,500 in 2025.
