A bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant invoked Article 142 of the Constitution, saying it was doing so “to do complete justice” while keeping in mind the future prospects of the young protesters.The court also directed the Centre to formulate a pan-India policy on compensation and provide compensation within three months to families of students who ended their lives over the NEET paper leak. At the Centre’s request, however, the Supreme Court permitted Delhi Police to register fresh FIRs against 2,873 individuals with serious criminal antecedents who were present at the Jantar Mantar protest. It also said any FIRs registered in connection with the same protests in states or Union Territories that were not before the court would not be pursued and would be treated as closed.
