The Trump administration is considering limited military strikes against Iranian military sites along the Strait of Hormuz, aiming to prevent Tehran from rebuilding missile and radar capabilities that threaten international commercial shipping.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow passage between Iran and Oman that handles a massive share of global oil shipments daily.
What the US is doing and why
CENTCOM has reportedly executed strikes hitting roughly 80 to 140 military targets in single operations, focused on degrading Iran’s ability to threaten vessels transiting the strait. Trump has positioned the US as the “guardian of the strait,” flatly rejecting Iran’s claims that it can close the waterway to international traffic.
The strikes come after a June 2026 memorandum of understanding between the two countries effectively collapsed. Trump declared that agreement “over” following renewed Iranian attacks on commercial shipping, which had been the original catalyst for de-escalation talks.
