—The resignation. Emmanuel Nchimbi announced on 25 August that he will step down as Tanzania’s vice president on 4 September, just 295 days after taking office.
—The reason given. He said he was ‘fully satisfied, without any doubt’ that President Samia Suluhu Hassan wanted change, honouring a pledge made a year earlier to leave whenever she did.
—The newspaper. Six days before the announcement, the daily MwanaHALISI had its publishing licence suspended for six months over a report that Nchimbi was resisting pressure to resign.
—The party. A day after the announcement, the ruling CCM expelled Nchimbi from its membership, citing violations of party ethics it did not describe.
