Aug. 31 (UPI) -- A mysterious island estimated to cover an area of over 105,000 square feet appeared in a British Columbia reservoir before disappearing just as enigmatically.

Locals spotted the tree-covered island in the Williston Reservoir, north of MacKenzie, earlier this month.

B.C. Hydro spokesman Bob Gammer said he was initially skeptical of the reports, as photos can easily be faked with AI.

"It's certainly something we've not heard of before," Gammer told CBC News. "And with not very many people reporting it, it was difficult to locate."

Officials were able to confirm the existence of the island by spotting it in satellite imagery from July 20.
