I don’t really know when it began to happen, but all of a sudden, seemingly overnight, friends I knew were forcing me to accompany them to search for packs of Pokémon cards. I’ve been to the Best Buy in Union Square and local game shops in Brooklyn, vending machines in Penn Station and multistory Barnes & Nobles, where disgruntled shop employees point angrily at signs that say they are already sold out and they don’t know when they restock. Most of these rooms smell obscene.
