Around 60% of Bengaluru’s road space is occupied by parked vehicles, leaving less room for moving traffic and worsening congestion, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said on Monday (August 31).Speaking at a meeting with former mayors at Vidhana Soudha, Mr. Gowda said building more roads alone would not resolve the city’s traffic problems and called for stricter parking regulation and enforcement.He said vehicles are routinely parked on both sides of even narrow roads, reducing the effective capacity of existing roads. He said there is a need for appointing a dedicated agency to regulate and enforce parking rules, as the existing civic and police workforce is inadequate for the task.He stressed the need to make better use of existing road space, arguing that the government continued to face public criticism despite building roads to address congestion. “Unless people develop a sense of self-discipline, it will be impossible to find a solution to Bengaluru’s traffic problem,” Mr. Gowda said.The Minister also stressed the need for adoption of micro-mobility for journeys of up to two kilometres. However, he said, this would be possible only if the city had usable footpaths and effective parking regulations.Mr. Gowda also expressed concern over widespread violations of civic and building regulations, including unauthorised changes to sewer lines and inadequate parking provision in residential buildings.
