Most parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to receive below normal monsoon rainfall in September except for pockets in the northern districts, according to the India Meteorological Department.In its weather outlook for September, the IMD has said that the monthly rainfall over the country was likely to be below normal, with the expected rainfall at 91% of the long period average. Some north and interior parts of Tamil Nadu may receive normal to above normal rainfall in September.It has also warned that below normal rainfall could adversely affect water resources and agriculture besides increasing risk of heat stress across several regions of the country.Tamil Nadu has so far recorded an overall rainfall of 16.3 cm, which is 22% below normal during this Southwest monsoon since June 1. Many districts, including Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, and Thoothukudi have recorded significant rainfall deficits, according to the Regional Meteorological Centre.The IMD has attributed moderate to strong El Nino conditions that prevailed over the equatorial Pacific in August as one of the factors for rainfall deficiency across the country. Currently, strong El Nino conditions are prevailing, which could keep monsoon subdued, and it is expected to strengthen further in the coming months.However, forecasts from international climate centres indicate positive Indian Ocean Dipole likely to develop during September and partly offset the adverse impact of El Nino.In September, most parts of Tamil Nadu is expected to experience hot weather with both maximum and minimum temperature likely to remain above normal, according to RMC.
