With Southwest monsoon expected to become active in northern parts of the country, rainfall over most parts of Tamil Nadu is likely to decline during the first few days of July.The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted light to moderate rain over a few parts of the State and the temperatures may remain near normal during the first week of July. Most districts in the State are likely to experience above normal day temperatures in July as well, except for some parts along western ghats.In its monthly outlook for July, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) noted that most parts of the State are likely to experience warm nights in July as minimum temperatures are also likely to be above average during the month.July’s rainfall is likely to be normal to above normal in many districts. While some north interior and southern districts are likely to experience below normal rainfall, some pockets may receive normal rainfall. Interior districts are likely to receive above normal rainfall.On the forecast for the next few days, officials of the RMC noted that isolated rainfall of light to moderate intensity would continue till Monday. With monsoon set to pick up pace in Kerala later this week, isolated places over western ghats districts such as Nilgiris and Theni have a possibility of heavy rainfall on Friday and Saturday.Temperatures would continue to remain near normal in most places till July 6 as dry weather may prevail in interior areas. Though coastal places such as Chennai recorded slightly above normal temperatures on Tuesday, residents would have felt warmer weather than the actual temperature due to moisture in the atmosphere, officials said.On Tuesday, Madurai airport recorded 39 degrees Celsius, which was the highest maximum temperature recorded in the State for the day. Chennai’s Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 38.1 degrees Celsius and 38 degrees Celsius respectively.Sharp showers lashed some areas of Chennai, including Egmore, Villivakkam, Madhavaram, Meenambakkam, and Thiruninravur, during Tuesday evening hours. Other places such as Valparai and Coimbatore also received light rainfall.Similar weather may continue in Chennai on Wednesday with thunderstorm activity expected during evening/night hours.
