Following assurances given by Fisheries Minister A. Srinath to the representatives of all Rameswaram mechanised boat fishermen associations that their demands would be fulfilled, the fishermen have called off their indefinite strike and hunger strike protest.Over the past month, 29 Tamil Nadu fishermen have been arrested and remanded to judicial custody in Sri Lankan prisons. Additionally, 20 fishermen are serving sentences as convicted prisoners after receiving prison terms of six months, one year, and two years.In this context, emphasising demands such as securing the release of fishermen captured by the Sri Lankan Navy, holding bilateral talks between fishermen of both countries to find a permanent solution to the Indo-Lanka fisherfolk issue, and providing relief from the Union and State governments for mechanised boat hulls that were seized by the Sri Lankan Navy and have not yet been released, Rameswaram mechanised boat fishermen began their indefinite strike on Sunday.They had also announced that a hunger strike protest would be held on September 1.Meanwhile, an advisory meeting of mechanised boat fishermen was held on Monday at the Rameswaram fishing jetty under the leadership of fishermen representative Jesuraja.During this meeting, it was announced that representatives of the Rameswaram mechanised boat fishermen associations met Mr. Srinath on Sunday evening.Based on the Minister’s assurance during the meeting that the fishermen’s demands would be fulfilled, the Rameswaram fishermen announced their decision to withdraw their ongoing strike and hunger strike protests.
