Demanding the release of nine fishermen along with their boat who are imprisoned in Sri Lankan prisons, Rameswaram fishermen engaged in a one-day token strike here on Saturday.A few days ago, nine fishermen who went fishing from Rameswaram in a mechanised boat were detained by the Sri Lankan Navy. The fishermen were arrested on charges of cross-border fishing and imprisoned in Sri Lanka.Condemning the arrest and urging the Union and State governments to take action to release the arrested fishermen and the boat, Rameswaram fishermen engaged in a one-day token strike protest.Due to this, more than 500 mechanised boats remained docked at the Rameswaram fishing harbour. Further, more than 3,000 fishermen did not go to sea for fishing. Meanwhile, over 100 smaller mechanised boats obtained permits from the Fisheries Department and went fishing.
