Two Canadian entrepreneurs have showed that thousands of discarded plastic bottles could be turned into something far more useful than clothing, carpets or sleeping bags. In Meteghan, Nova Scotia, JD Composites has unveiled a concept home made using material derived from more than 612,000 recycled plastic bottles, offering a striking example of how recycled plastic could find a new purpose in construction, according to Invest Nova Scotia.ALSO READ: Oracle layoffs September 1How do 612,000 plastic bottles become a house?The process began with PET foam made from recycled plastic bottles. Joel German, co-owner of JD Composites, explained: “We work with a company out of Ontario, Armacell, to source pre-made panels. Armacell creates PET foam from recycled bottles by mulching them up and then melting them down to make small beads.”The recycled material then goes through an extrusion process, which gives the foam its required density depending on how it will be used.“From there it goes through an extruding process that gives it its density depending on its secondary application- like aerospace, commercial windmills, or in this case walls for a home”, German said.The finished panels don't necessarily look like recycled plastic. JD Composites says its focus is on applications where the material can be produced and used at scale, including smaller dwellings, shelters, sheds, offices and sleeping barracks.JD Composites' concept home comes as the construction industry faces growing pressure to find more sustainable materials and methodsDisaster relief housing is also on the company's radar. “Our idea isn’t to make custom homes for couples looking to build a new dream home. Our goal is to get in line with projects that allow for volume sales- smaller dwellings, shelters, sheds, offices, sleeping barracks. David Saulnier, the company's other co-owner, brought a background that helped the team explore how the recycled material could be adapted for housing. The concept home is being used for demonstration and rental purposes while the company continues testing how its materials perform over time.“We want to watch how the different materials we use on the homes react overtime, things like paints and primers, monitoring the efficiency and different components.”Engineers have checked the home's various aspects, but the company wants to see how everything performs after years of exposure and use.Could recycled plastic help build future communities?For JD Composites, the bigger opportunity goes beyond a single house. German and Saulnier are exploring potential projects involving tiny homes, emergency shelters, hurricane-proof housing, sheds, composite decks and other structures.The company's ambition is perhaps best summed up by German's question: “If building one small home saved 612,000 bottles from going into the ocean or a landfill, what would a small community built entirely of the same material do for statistics and awareness!”For now, the Nova Scotia house remains a concept and testing ground. But it also demonstrates an intriguing possibility: yesterday's plastic waste could become part of tomorrow's homes.
