The AI industry has found a new way to flex its growing political muscle. Build American AI, a 501(c)(4) nonprofit advocacy group established in 2025, is spending to support candidates in battleground states who back data center development, turning what was once a mundane zoning issue into one of the most heavily funded political fights of the 2026 cycle.
The money behind the machine
Build American AI is connected to Leading the Future, a super PAC that has raised somewhere between $100 million and $140 million from influential figures across the AI sector. As a 501(c)(4), Build American AI is classified as a “social welfare” organization under US tax law, meaning it doesn’t have to disclose its donors publicly. Total political spending tied to AI interests has exceeded $150 million for the 2025-2026 cycle, more than the entire crypto industry spent on federal races during the 2024 election. The organization has also invested heavily in digital outreach, reportedly building a supporter list of over 500,000 people through targeted advertising.
Why data centers are suddenly political
Modern AI data centers require enormous amounts of electricity and cooling, which in turn demands significant water resources. Communities that once welcomed the jobs and tax revenue are now pushing back, worried about strain on local power grids, rising utility costs, and environmental impact. This tension has turned data centers into a genuine campaign issue in several states heading into 2026. Build American AI’s strategy is to identify candidates who are open to streamlining permitting and stabilizing regulations for data center construction, framing the issue partly through a national security lens, arguing that restricting US data center development hands an advantage to China in the global AI race. The organization also appears to be investing in influencer-based outreach and grassroots digital campaigns designed to counter local opposition groups.
