The Western Cape Legislature has past a motion to establish an ad hoc committee to look at the violent crime afflicting the Western Cape.
The Western Cape Legislature has approved an amended motion establishing an Ad Hoc Committee that will examine the causes of persistent killings and the effectiveness of interventions by government, police and the criminal justice system.
The ANC-sponsored motion was sparked by persistent violent crime and high murder levels in the province with hundreds killed in months.
In her original motion, ANC Chief Whip Ayanda Bans said the committee should assess the existing measures, programmes and interventions aimed at preventing and responding to persistent killings and violent crimes in the province.
Bans had proposed that a ten-member committee comprising all political parties be formed and report within six months of its establishment.
