The 2026 NFL regular season has arrived, and the Buffalo Bills’ initial 53-man roster has been set. Over the last two days, the Bills made 38 moves to get roster-compliant, whether through roster cuts, trades or placing players on injury lists. In the NFL, it’s important to understand that there are two waves of cutdown day. The first is the initial roster, and then there’s the next day, when all waiver claims have been processed and eligible free agents have signed with new teams. The Bills and general manager Brandon Beane might have kept someone initially as one of their last decisions, but that player could wind up off the roster by the time all those second-wave moves go through. With that written, how did the Bills land on their opening 53-man roster, and what are some moves they could consider on Monday? Here’s a full breakdown of the initial 2026 Bills squad.Quarterbacks (2)Josh Allen, Kyle AllenOnce again, the Bills will head into a regular season with only two quarterbacks — as has been the trend with Beane as their general manager. Kyle Allen won the backup job outright with a strong preseason, which made Shane Buechele the odd man out. I’d expect Buechele to be back in Buffalo as their practice squad quarterback if he clears waivers.Waived: Shane BuecheleRunning backs (3)James Cook, Ray Davis, Ty JohnsonThis running back trio has been one of the most consistently predictable on the team for three years in a row, and the Bills hope they can get similar results. Johnson, their third-down back the last two years, is on the mend from an injury, so it is worth wondering if Cook could open up the season with a bigger role than we’ve seen for him in recent years — specifically in passing situations. And if it goes well enough, could it convince the Bills to make it a permanent change? The Bills have used their running backs’ reps differently in practice under new head coach Joe Brady than they had previously; this summer, one player took a lot of team drill reps in a row before ceding to the next. In previous years, substitutions were more frequent. It’s one of the early side-stories to monitor in Week 1.Waived: Frank Gore Jr., Ian WheelerClues we learned about cutdown day from the Bills' last preseason game Joe BuscagliaWide receivers (5)DJ Moore, Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer, Skyler BellWhether the Bills would keep a sixth wide receiver was up in the air. The veteran Trent Sherfield came close to playing his way onto the team with a strong preseason. The Bills had to value a certain “flight risk” when it comes to who they kept, and a 30-year-old journeyman receiver wasn’t likely to stay on this 53-man roster. Sherfield, though, is a good special teams player and a great locker room presence, so getting him to the practice squad is likely a high priority for the Bills. One more possible addition to this group could be in the works, too. With Ray Davis looking shaky on punt returns during the preseason finale, the Bills could be in the market for a punt returner who gives them value on offense on top of it. One player to monitor for those purposes is former Bengals wide receiver and returner Charlie Jones, who was waived on Sunday. Jones even spent three seasons at the University at Buffalo, so there is a little local appeal here, too, which the Bills don’t shy away from. Whether it be with an IR move, or moving on from one of their six outside linebackers, they have options to find a spot.Reserve/PUP: Tyrell Shavers
