ORCHARD PARK, NY — With the Buffalo Bills’ 28-27 comeback victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Thursday night, the preseason is officially over. With it, the on-field chances for players to earn a spot on the regular-season roster have officially expired. All that’s left for the Bills to do is to whittle their roster down from 91 to 53 by Sunday, Aug. 30 at 6 p.m. ET. Bills general manager Brandon Beane usually tries to be as creative as possible to give himself the best chance to keep everyone he’d like. Now with the preseason totally done, what might the final roster look like? Here is my final Bills 53-man roster projection ahead of final cuts.Quarterback (2)Josh Allen, Kyle AllenThe return of Allen squared as the quarterback room seemed unofficially official after Kyle Allen’s preseason showing against the Cleveland Browns, and it became official when he got Thursday night off. Even with Allen winning the backup job, it would be somewhat of a surprise if Shane Buechele wasn’t back on the practice squad.Waived: Shane BuecheleRunning back (3)James Cook, Ray Davis, Ty JohnsonThis running back trio has no mystery surrounding it, but the lingering question is whether Johnson will be ready for Week 1. If he isn’t, whoever they keep on the practice squad is a likely candidate to be elevated early in the season. At that point, it would be Frank Gore Jr. against Ian Wheeler for the practice squad spot. Gore’s plus performance on Thursday was big for him, but was it enough to hold off Wheeler, who has looked good all summer? I give Wheeler a slight edge right now.Waived: Frank Gore Jr., Ian WheelerTop Plays from Steelers @ BillsWide receiver (5)DJ Moore, Khalil Shakir, Keon Coleman, Joshua Palmer, Skyler BellThe top five are pretty secure, so it comes down to whether the Bills would keep a sixth. With all five locks trending well health-wise toward Week 1, keeping another could be less pressing. Mecole Hardman and Trent Sherfield were both considered, but Hardman’s main draw is as the punt returner. Despite Davis muffing a punt on Thursday, the Bills at least have some safer backup options in-house in Dee Alford and Shakir. Having Hardman on the practice squad, if they can get him there, would be a good insurance policy for Davis. Sherfield, with his locker-room presence and skill set, seems like a tremendous practice squad asset throughout the season, and since he’s a vested veteran, he’s not subject to waivers.Reserve/PUP: Tyrell Shavers
