Ukraine has accumulated enough natural gas to meet its baseline requirements for the upcoming 2026-2027 winter season, reaching its target a month ahead of schedule. Shmyhal confirmed that the reserves ensure the country is prepared for the autumn-winter period, though work on physical infrastructure protection continues. He expressed gratitude to Ukrainian gas production companies, the Gas Transmission System Operator of Ukraine (GTSOU), the state-owned oil and gas company Naftogaz, and the broader energy sector for achieving the milestone early. Nationwide winter preparations and infrastructure resilience The early accumulation of gas reserves aligns with a broader national effort to prepare critical infrastructure and residential areas against anticipated Russian attacks. On Aug. 21, Minister of Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport Mykola Kalashnyk announced that approximately 100,000 residential buildings – representing 70% of the government’s target – had already been prepared for the heating season. Kalashnyk noted that preparations were also completed for 12,400 boiler houses and 11,700 kilometers (7,270 miles) of heating networks. The government has allocated nearly Hr. 6.8 billion ($152 million) for repair works and infrastructure protection. The primary focus of this funding is decentralizing the energy system, maintaining reserve capacity, and ensuring heating and water networks can operate autonomously during potential blackouts.
