There was a certain innocuous piece of news doing the rounds last week that many of us could have missed. Apparently, according to the registrar of companies, there are more than 60 new churches registered every month. Sixty, for heaven’s sake! That’s 12 every working day of the week.
As much as Kenya is ranked highly among the easiest countries to register companies, if these are the statistics used to rank us, then we are in a dark space. It is not the right kind of businesses that we should be registering.
I have nothing against churches. In fact, we have a few churches that do good by providing health and education to those who cannot afford these services. There are a few that provide succour where such is needed.
But most of these briefcase churches being registered daily are nothing more than government-sanctioned businesses to relieve poor people of the little that they might have. They are run by people who, were we in the Middle Ages, would have been perfect candidates for the stake.
