South Africa’s Mbombe armoured vehicle technology is gaining a new foothold in Europe after a Ukraine-developed variant received approval for military service, potentially opening a wider market for the South African-designed defence technology.
The MAC OWL, developed by Paramount Greece in partnership with Ukrainian defence company MAC HUB, is based on the architecture of Paramount’s Mbombe 4 Infantry Combat Vehicle.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence formally approved and codified the vehicle for service with its armed forces in June, giving the platform a reference customer in one of Europe’s most demanding battlefields, where armoured vehicles face mines, artillery fragments and other high-intensity threats.
The approval comes as Paramount Group sees growing opportunities in European and NATO markets, with Bloomberg reporting that the South African-founded defence company sees shifting US-Europe relations driving a sharp increase in military spending across Europe.
“There were no NATO markets two years ago. That has definitely opened up,” Deon Grobler, who heads Paramount’s international vehicle business and product development, said, noting that “all of a sudden spending has changed completely out of Europe.”
