The toll in the flash flood and mudslide in Nepal and China has risen to 691, AFP reported on Sunday. Nearly 3,000 persons were missing.On the Nepal side, 2,426 persons were out of contact as of Saturday, the country’s disaster management authority was quoted as saying. The number was 546 in Tibet, with 16 persons confirmed dead.A total of 517 foreigners were among those out of contact. This includes tourists as well as foreign workers, reported AFP. New Delhi said on Saturday that 287 Indians were missing in Nepal.The floods occurred in the Rasuwa district along Nepal’s northern border with China on Wednesday. The mountainous district is located about 120 km north of Kathmandu. As there was no rainfall in the area, residents did not have a warning about the deluge.The United States Geological Survey has said that the floods were caused by a glacial collapse that sent a wall of water and debris downstream, reported AFP. The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development, which works on climate and glacial conditions in Nepal, had earlier stated that according to its preliminary investigation, a large volume of ice and rock debris had entered the Lende Khola, a tributary of the Bhotekoshi river, which generated a sudden surge that carried water, sediment and large boulders downstream.Warning to rescuersOn Sunday, as the rescue efforts entered the fifth day, Nepal warned the teams involved in the operations about rising floodwaters in the Bhotekoshi river in Rasuwa.“Therefore, all personnel engaged in search, rescue, and relief operations, those in riverside areas, and everyone else in affected areas including Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, and Chitwan are requested to exercise caution,” stated the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.India sends tunnel rescue teamA technical team from India for tunnel rescue has arrived in Nepal to assist with the operations, said the Ministry of External Affairs on Saturday. This came as more than 100 workers are believed to be trapped inside multiple hydropower tunnels, reported AFP.Apart from India, China has also sent a nine-person team to help with the tunnel rescue operations. Additionally, New Delhi stated that it was sending to Nepal a 19-member contingent of six forensic teams to assist in the analysis of DNA samples for identification of mortal remains of those killed in the floods. “Further targeted assistance, as per the requirements of Nepal, is being mobilised,” stated the external affairs ministry. “This includes Bailey bridges and associated technical teams for restoring connectivity and helping in relief efforts.”Edited by Sneha.
