Kathryn Whitehead wasn’t looking to leave Carnegie Mellon, an American university known globally for its science and technology programs. But then Canada came calling with an offer “almost unheard of right now,” and the chemical engineer, whose work could unlock therapies for Parkinson’s disease and cystic fibrosis, didn’t hesitate.
Whitehead is heading to the University of British Columbia as research chair in translational drug delivery — one of 64 academics appointed Thursday to key research posts at 21 Canadian universities under a federal program aimed at attracting the world’s top minds.
