Nearly four years after ChatGPT kicked off the great AI panic, the American workforce appears to have absorbed the shock better than almost anyone predicted. A new YouGov survey of 1,250 US workers found that just 3% reported losing their jobs to AI automation since 2023.
The survey, conducted between July 30 and August 4, 2026, was commissioned by a sociologist who researches AI. Even the researcher, who describes himself as holding a pessimistic view on AI’s implications, was surprised by the modest numbers.
The numbers tell a quieter story than the headlines
About 95% of respondents said they experienced zero job loss connected to AI.
On the flip side, roughly 6% of those surveyed said they landed new positions that emerged specifically because of AI adoption. Think roles like AI data labeling, compliance monitoring, and the growing ecosystem of jobs built around keeping machine learning systems honest and functional.
