A wedding party’s ride took a terrifying turn towards chaos when their bus swerved to avoid a scooter, careered off the road and overturned at a petrol station.Dramatic CCTV footage captured the moment the coach narrowly avoided mowing down the two-wheeler before smashing into the petrol station in Kerala, India, on Thursday morning.The bus was carrying about 35 members of a wedding party travelling between Kalady and Elanji when the crash happened at Kakkoor, near Koothattukulam, at about 10.25am.Footage shows a scooter suddenly cutting across the path of the bus.The driver appears to brake heavily before swerving sharply to the right in an attempt to avoid the rider.The sudden manoeuvre sent the bus veering off the road and into the premises of the petrol station.It smashed into a small concrete pillar before tipping onto its side near the fuel dispensing area.The bus narrowly missed the petrol pumps, a car that had stopped to refuel and another two-wheeler.The scooter rider also escaped injury.About 20 to 35 passengers were reported to have suffered injuries, with four people understood to have sustained serious injuries.The injured were taken to private hospitals in nearby Koothattukulam, with four reportedly requiring treatment at one hospital.Police said initial reports indicated none of the injuries were life-threatening, although the condition of those seriously injured was not immediately known.A man sitting on a two-wheeler after refuelling was also reportedly caught up in the terrifying incident but managed to escape unharmed.The crash caused alarm among motorists and residents in the area as people rushed to help those inside the wrecked bus.Police and fire and rescue teams attended the scene and assisted with the rescue operation.Authorities are now examining CCTV footage to determine exactly what happened and whether the bus was travelling at excessive speed.According to police, the driver was attempting to give way to a motorcycle rider who allegedly made an unexpected turn without signalling.The driver’s attempt to avoid the two-wheeler appears to have caused him to lose control of the bus.The dramatic incident comes amid renewed concerns over road safety in India after a separate horror crash in the northern state of Bihar last week claimed five lives.A bus reportedly travelling at high speed careered into a crowd gathered beside a road to watch an orchestra performance in Lauriya, in Bihar’s West Champaran district.Police said the driver lost control while attempting to avoid a head-on collision with a truck before ploughing into the spectators.Two people died at the scene and three others later died in hospital.Five more people remained in hospital following the crash.The event had been organised as part of celebrations for the birth of a baby in a nearby village, with the large crowd spilling onto the roadside to watch the performance.
