The toll due to the flash flood and mudslide in Nepal rose to 586 on Friday, while the country’s Prime Minister Balen Shah said that over 4,400 persons had been rescued, The Hindu reported.The Nepal Tourism Board said that 85 out of 183 missing Indian tourists had been rescued. The Red Cross has said that as many as 93,000 persons may have been affected by the deluge, and the toll is expected to rise, AFP reported.The floods occurred in the Rasuwa district along Nepal’s northern border with China on Wednesday. The mountainous district is located about 120 km north of Kathmandu. As there was no rainfall in the area, residents did not have a warning about the deluge.Here’s more on this and other top updates:Search and rescue updateNepal Prime Minister Balen Shah said in a social media post that 4,451 persons have been rescued, including 191 from a hydropower tunnel and 517 persons rescued through air operations. He said that 15,431 security personnel, including 6,755 from the Army, 4,473 from the police and 4,203 from the armed police forces are conducting the operations.India’s Ministry of External Affairs said that 320 Indians in Nepal were not contactable. Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that the numbers are based on preliminary information and are expected to change.Further, the foreign ministry said that about 100 persons of Indian origin, who are foreign citizens, were also not contactable. Ninety-six Indian citizens stranded on the Chinese side had crossed into Nepal and efforts are underway to evacuate them, spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said.Nepal agrees to foreign helpThe Nepal government reversed an earlier decision not to seek help from international search teams, after diplomatic pressure from countries whose citizens are missing after the floods, The Kathmandu Post reported.The government had said on Wednesday that Nepali personnel were capable of handling search and rescue efforts. However, the newspaper on Friday quoted an unidentified government official as saying that they “received massive pressure from the international community to allow at least search-and-rescue teams and some experts because their citizens have also gone missing in the floods”.India sends more aidThe Indian Embassy in Kathmandu said that a third flight carrying aid material from India has arrived in Nepal’s capital. An 11-member medical and tunnel rescue team, along with relief material, is now on the field, the embassy said.\On Wednesda, India had handed over a second consignment of humanitarian assistance to Nepal, including 37.5 tonnes of humanitarian assistance and disaster relief material, medicines and food packets.Edited by Neerad Pandharipande.
