As many as 5,543 abandoned and unclaimed vehicles found parked on streets and roadside across the city are being processed for disposal, with 1,936 of them set to be sold through e-auction by the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC).The exercise follows directions from Greater Chennai Police Commissioner A. Amalraj to identify vehicles that had been left unattended for several years and trace their owners. Teams led by Deputy Commissioners of Police of the city’s 12 police districts identified and seized the vehicles.The vehicles were subsequently handed over to the GCC for auction. The civic body assessed 1,936 vehicles and published the details on its website for e-auction.The auctions begin on Friday, with 180 vehicles from St. Thomas Mount police district scheduled to be auctioned. This will be followed by auctions of 362 vehicles from Kilpauk on August 31, 522 from Triplicane on September 2, 592 from Washermenpet on September 7, 98 from Kolathur on September 9, and 182 from Flower Bazaar on September 11.The remaining 3,607 vehicles are being assessed and will be put up for auction subsequently. The dates will be announced later.Separately, police are preparing to auction 102 vehicles seized in narcotics cases. The vehicles comprise 81 two-wheelers, 12 three-wheelers, and nine light motor vehicles. Following court orders and valuation of the vehicles, steps are being taken to conduct the e-auction through the Metal Scrap Trade Corporation (MSTC) portal, said the city police.
