Aug. 28 (UPI) -- The cyclospora outbreak in lettuce has spread to 20 states, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
The CDC added Georgia, Tennessee and Texas to the list of states with outbreaks of cyclosporiasis from iceberg lettuce grown at Taylor Farms de Mexico.
A total of 11,458 illnesses have been linked to the outbreak, which is an increase of 528 since its Aug. 20 update, the CDC reported. The number of deaths is still at two, both of whom were in Michigan. There were 17,180 cases reported nationwide.
The expiration dates on recalled products have all passed and are no longer available in stores or restaurants. The new data does not necessarily mean more people are getting sick. It takes about six weeks to catch up with the testing data. The actual number of illnesses is likely higher because some recovered without getting tested.
