HCG Suchirayu Hospital in Hubballi has performed nearly 100 minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS) procedures, thus providing advanced cardiac care in North Karnataka.Addressing a press conference in Hubballi on Thursday, Senior Consultant, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon of HCG Suchirayu Hospital Sharan Hallad said that MICS represents an important advancement in cardiac surgery with smaller incisions helping reduce tissue damage, blood loss and scarring.“MICS can be used for a range of procedures, including coronary artery bypass grafting, valve replacement, correction of selected congenital heart defects and removal of heart tumours. In appropriately selected patients, minimally invasive approaches can facilitate faster recovery and an earlier return to routine activities,” Dr. Hallad said.He stressed that not every patient will be a candidate for MICS. Age, overall health, severity of the disease and the patient’s cardiac anatomy are among the factors assessed by the surgical team before deciding on the approach.Replying to a query, he said that the first MICS was done in Hubballi in 2019 and in the subsequent years, the frequency of MICS at the hospital has increased and the success rate is up to 99%.Shorter hospitalisation, reduced scarring and faster recovery are among the potential benefits of MICS, he added.Consultant Anaesthesiologist Vishwanath said that anaesthesia and peri-operative management are critical to the success of minimally invasive cardiac procedures.“Specialised anaesthesia techniques, continuous monitoring, effective pain management and early extubation can help patients recover faster and reduce ICU stay,” he added.
