‘Sketching Japan – An Architect’s Visual Journey by B Ganesh Babu,’ reads the sign at the Indian Institute of World Culture’s (IIWC) art gallery. “I am an architect by profession, and sketching has long been my passion,” says Ganesh, as he shares anecdotes behind the 35 sketches on display.The show is a culmination of two of Ganesh’s passions — sketching and everything Japanese, the language, the landscape and more.“I was born in South Bengaluru and grew up studying in Basavanagudi. My interest in sketching began when I was in school. I enjoyed drawing cartoons, and a few of my early efforts were published in Kannada newspapers and magazines. Looking back, I feel fortunate that this early interest eventually led me towards architecture, a profession that gave me the opportunity to combine creativity, observation and sketching,” says Ganesh.After nearly four decades of professional practice in architecture and interior design, Ganesh ensures he takes the time out to relax and sketch. “I enjoy sketching places that interest me. I call these my ‘Drawelogues’ — a visual travelogue of the places I have visited and the impressions they left on me.”
