Approximately 20 teaching faculty and administrative staff of the Government Arts and Science College, Kurambalur. in Perambalur district staged a protest on Friday condemning the non-payment of salaries by Bharathidasan University (BDU) for the past three months.Established in 2006 as a constituent college of BDU, the college was converted into a government college in 2019. However, the payment of salaries was assigned to BDU.Staff working here were appointed by BDU under the category of guest lecturers and were paid on an hourly basis.“Guest lecturers working in the college earn between ₹16,000 and ₹20,000 a month while hourly basis teachers get ₹10,000. Payments were stopped after the change in governments. Our salary is a modest amount compared to that paid to guest lecturers under the direct control of the BDU, but we are really caught in a bind when even this has been stopped,” an agitating faculty member told The Hindu.He said instructors of nine courses that have been labelled as ‘unapproved’ by the university have not been paid.Administrative workers are affected by the payment freeze.The protesting staff urged the BDU to pay the pending salaries with immediate effect. “If our appeals go unheard, we will stop taking classes from next week,” said a guest lecturer.
