U.S. makes fresh moves with Africa’s 2nd-largest economy as China and Russia deepen North African ties in different ways

Egypt has long been a focal point for international diplomacy and security due to its control of the Suez Canal, and massive regional influence. Recently, the United States has made fresh efforts to deepen its relationship with the North African nation, but competing global powers like China and Russia are also deepening their ties across North African countries.

U.S. deepens diplomatic and economic ties

In late August 2026, Egypt and the United States held high-level diplomatic talks to reinforce their long-standing partnership.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty met with Michael J. Rigas, the U.S. Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, to discuss ways to boost their political, trade, and investment ties.

Egypt's State Information Service reported that Both representatives emphasized that their alliance remains a "key pillar in supporting security and stability in the region".
