Getting hired as a Premier League manager has always come with pressure. Getting fired has apparently never been faster.
A Guardian analysis published in February 2026 found that 22 of the last 50 permanent managers to leave their Premier League posts were gone within a year of arriving. That is a 44% failure rate by the most brutal measure available: survival.
From four seasons to eighteen months
Average managerial tenure in the Premier League has collapsed from around four seasons to approximately one and a half seasons.
The pressure is visible at the very start of the 2026/27 campaign. Entering the new season, the average tenure of managers across all 20 clubs sat at just 474 days, the lowest opening-day figure in the league’s history.
