Six thousand dollars a night. It’s the phrase that ricochets around the Travelsphere whenever Amanvari, the long-awaited Aman resort in Baja California Sur, is invoked.

The brand’s first foray in Mexico has been an eventful ride: nearly a decade in the making, with a change of architects and multiple iterations along the way, it finally opened four weeks ago, six years later than was originally planned. That’s fodder enough for a bit of chatter, but consider also the raft of tech titans and celebrities who’ve purchased Aman-branded residences, sprawling four-to seven-bedroom casas that surround the resort, whose prices have reached effortlessly into the eight figures. Then there’s the fact that Amanvari is in the 1,500-acre Costa Palmas development, which is not in Cabo San Lucas or San José del Cabo, Baja’s famous Pacific Ocean destination towns, but in East Cape, a stretch of stunning coastline 50 miles away on the Sea of Cortez.

Its USPs: lapidary waters kissing empty white beaches, grand mountain views, pristine marine environments and nature reserves, sleepy villages, and a total absence of the traffic that plagues the Tourist Corridor. “Amanvari solidifies Baja as the ultimate luxury destination in the Americas,” says Jack Ezon, founder and managing partner of elite US travel designers Embark Beyond. “There is no other place in the region with its concentration of ultra-exclusive resorts, retail, restaurants and beach clubs. Aman adds a truly private beach experience for people looking to hide from the public eye.”
