New Mexico State at Florida State, 7 p.m., CWIt’s nice to have a marquee brand like the Seminoles on opening weekend, but the talk all offseason has been about head coach Mike Norvell being on the hot seat. The spread on this game suggests FSU should do just fine — though last year’s team started 3-0 with an upset win over Alabama before finishing 5-7. Norvell will have every incentive to run it up in this one.Line: Florida State -316. Jacksonville State at North Dakota State, 5:30 p.m., CBS Sports NetworkDo not sleep on what is now a Group of 6 matchup, with NDSU making the leap to FBS this season. The Bison, standard bearers of FCS with 10 national titles since 2011, join the new-look Mountain West and immediately welcome a Jax State squad that has reached the Conference USA title game two years running. Both squads have solid continuity considering their place in the college football pecking order, and each could be in the mix for a conference title. Plus, Week 0 in the Fargodome should be a hoot.Line: NDSU -75. Hawaii at Stanford, 7 p.m., ACC NetworkFormer Stanford quarterback Tavita Pritchard returns as head coach of his alma mater, marking the third coach in three seasons for a Cardinal program desperate to get back on track. That could be a challenge this year, with a tough schedule and questions at quarterback, where Michigan transfer Davis Warren takes over after missing last season to injury. Stanford can ill afford a second straight season-opening loss to Hawaii, which improved to nine wins in Year 4 under head coach Timmy Chang in 2025.Line: Stanford -44. San Jose State at No. 14 USC, 3 p.m., NBCThe spread doesn’t suggest a close game, but the Trojans are still one of the more intriguing teams in 2026. Star quarterback Jayden Maiava is back, and longtime head coach Gary Patterson was hired as defensive coordinator to fix a unit that has held the program back under Lincoln Riley. USC has CFP aspirations, but a tough schedule, and patience for Riley is fading. Many will expect a dominant Week 0 performance against a San Jose State squad that threw it more than 40 times a game last season.Line: USC -39.53. NC State at Virginia, 3:30 p.m., ESPNThere’s quite a backstory to this one, which was originally slated to be played in Rio de Janeiro, but was moved to Charlottesville in June due to operational issues overseas. It was also originally scheduled as a non-conference meeting between the two ACC foes, though that got adjusted when the league moved to a nine-game conference schedule. Logistics aside, the ACC petitioned to keep the game in Week 0, bringing a little extra shine to what should be a fun matchup. Virginia is fresh off a program-record 11 wins and a trip to the ACC title game, while NC State returns quarterback CJ Bailey and some optimism for 2026.Line: Virginia -4.52. Memphis at UNLV, 10 p.m., FoxA Group of 6 heavyweight showdown #AfterDark. UNLV is getting the G6 darling treatment after 10 wins under first-year head coach Dan Mullen in 2025. The Rebels have a chance to set the pace in the Mountain West with Boise State and others off to the Pac-12. Oklahoma and Auburn transfer Jackson Arnold enters as QB1 alongside star running back Jet Thomas. For Memphis, Charles Huff replaces Ryan Silverfield as head coach of a team that should have one of the highest roster budgets in the G6, and Huff has been cagey about the quarterback competition between Division II transfer Marcus Stokes and former four-star Air Noland. This game could impact the race for the G6 Playoff spot.Line: UNLV -4.51. North Carolina vs TCU, Noon, ESPNAnother season kicks off across the pond in Dublin, Ireland, and there’s definitely some schadenfreude afoot for college football fans on the heels of another headline-making but discouraging offseason from North Carolina and Bill Belichick. Much-maligned general manager Mike Lombardi was placed on administrative leave last month, and the on-field vibes aren’t much better in Year 2 under the legendary head coach. Yet we can’t look away. The outlook is sunnier for TCU, which is aiming to repeat last season’s smackdown in Chapel Hill, this time with Harvard transfer Jaden Craig at quarterback. There’s Big 12 sleeper energy for the Horned Frogs after winning nine games in 2025.Line: TCU -9.5
