Aug. 28 (UPI) -- Dolly Parton, who died Aug. 25 in Nashville at age 80 after a brief battle with cancer, leaves us at a time when women face extraordinary pressure not simply to live their lives, but to perform them flawlessly.
Marriage or relationships, careers, constant self-improvement, fitness routines, children's sports and language lessons must somehow be managed while projecting an image of effortless competence.
The result can resemble a new breed of superheroine, an advanced robot capable of handling whatever duty life may throw its way. The appearance is one of perfection: spotless, efficient, flavorless and color-neutral. It has very little to do with reality.
Dolly Parton was the opposite.
