German automotive supplier Mahle has invested seven million euros in a new production line and claims to be the first company to manufacture e-compressors in India. The facility will serve both the Indian market and global customers, and its launch is expected to create around 50 new jobs. E-compressors are a key component of thermal management systems in electric vehicles. They operate independently of the drivetrain and contribute not only to cabin climate control but also to battery temperature regulation. Maintaining the battery within its optimal temperature range can extend its lifespan, improve charging performance, and increase range.
With the new production facility, Mahle aims to further expand its portfolio of components for electrified powertrains. Recently, the supplier announced a new range extender for battery-electric trucks that will premiere at the IAA Transportation in Hannover, Germany, in September. The system combines a high-voltage generator with a compact internal combustion engine. At the trade fair, the company also plans to showcase an electric motor without rare-earth magnets tailored for heavy-duty commercial vehicles.
Mahle is already active in India’s electromobility sector as this ramps up with eye-watering speed. Mahle produces traction motors and control units for electric two- and three-wheelers in Coimbatore, in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Since 2023, the site has also housed a development centre where Mahle validates products, among other activities. With the new compressor production line, Mahle aims to further increase local value creation and, according to its own statements, supports the government initiative Make in India 2.0.
