Canada’s new counter-tariffs on more than 700 U.S. products — set to take effect Sept. 8 — will push up prices on everything from fish and cheese to appliances and cars. But experts say Canadians shouldn’t panic: the impact on overall inflation is expected to be modest, and many tariffed goods have Canadian-made or internationally sourced alternatives that can soften the blow to your wallet.

Canada’s counter-tariffs apply to products imported from the U.S. and match new American tariffs dollar-for-dollar on products in the same categories as those U.S. President Donald Trump targeted on Aug. 22, when tariffs on $27.6-billion of Canadian products imported to the U.S. were enacted.
