MANILA, Philippines — Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla clarified his proposal to allow the Philippine National Police (PNP) to inspect registered gun owners’ homes to check on their firearm’s safekeeping.
“It will not be done by a search warrant, but gun owners should sign a waiver that allows police to inspect their homes with one day’s notice,” Remulla explained in a press briefing in Camp Crame on Friday.
“We do not mean to catch them as criminals. We just want to make sure that they’re inspected, that their safekeeping of firearms is done in a proper way and that they have the proper facilities for it,” he added.
Remulla made the proposal on Thursday during the House of Representatives appropriations hearing on his department’s 2027 budget, suggesting that Congress amend gun regulations.
