Brazil is to build two supercomputers to boost its AI capabilities and improve technological sovereignty, the government said, with about 2.3 billion reais ($440m, £320m) in funding for the two major projects to be roughly evenly divided between Chinese and US companies.
Some 1.3bn reais is to go to a supercomputing infrastructure project in Rio de Janeiro to be developed by China’s Huawei Technologies and iFlytek, a partly state-owned group that develops voice-recognition and other technologies.
Another 1bn reais is to be allocated through a tender for a supercomputer in the north-eastern state of Rio Grande do Norte, for a project that’s projected to be one of the world’s top 10 AI processing systems.
