Their meeting comes as CIA Director John Ratcliffe made a surprise trip to Moscow on Tuesday to reportedly warn Putin against attacking a NATO member, The Wall Street Journal and Politico reported on Wednesday, Aug. 26. CIA’s warning to Moscow Citing people familiar with the matter, The Wall Street Journal and Politico reported that the CIA director’s warning centered on Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, as US intelligence officials reportedly fear Moscow could test NATO’s resolve through a limited attack on one of the Baltic states. According to the sources, Ratcliffe also reportedly warned Putin against providing military or economic support to Iran. Neither Washington nor Moscow publicly disclosed the outcome of the visit. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Ratcliffe did not meet with Putin, while US President Donald Trump described the trip as “semi-routine.” Despite downplaying Ratcliffe’s visit, Trump said that “something may come out of it,” adding that his administration is working “very hard to end the war in Ukraine.”
