The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) has warned the management of a residential apartment near the District Judge’s Court of stringent action, including sealing of the premises, for violating the basic solid waste management norms.GVMC Commissioner Ketan Garg, during an inspection of Wards 29, 32 and 33 on Thursday, reviewed the door-to-door waste segregation and collection system in the stretch from Saraswathi Park to the District Judge’s Court area in Ward 29.During the inspection, Mr. Garg found that an apartment near the Judge’s Court did not have the required two dustbins for segregation of wet and dry waste. The apartment was not handing over the waste to GVMC collection vehicles, despite the vehicles being deployed every day for door-to-door collection.Instead, the waste generated by the residents was being dumped on the roadside, creating unhygienic conditions in the locality. The Commissioner expressed displeasure over the violation and directed South Zonal Commissioner M. Mallaiah Naidu to initiate action, including sealing the apartment, if the management continued to violate the waste management rules.The apartment was given a strict warning and instructed to comply with the prescribed solid waste management norms immediately.Following the inspection, GVMC sanitation workers cleared the waste accumulated near the apartment.The GVMC Commissioner appealed to households and apartment residents to segregate wet, dry and hazardous waste without fail and hand it over only to GVMC’s door-to-door collection vehicles.He warned that the civic body would impose penalties and initiate stringent action against individuals, households and other establishments for dumping garbage on roads, in drains or at vacant sites.
