Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda on Thursday said disorder had become the system in Bengaluru and that this needed to change.

To address issues related to garbage, potholes, streetlights, and other civic problems, a committee will review issues across the five city corporations every month, Greater Bengaluru Development Minister Krishna Byre Gowda announced on Thursday. He said he would be part of the review committee along with the Additional Chief Secretary and the Chief Commissioner.The Minister was addressing presspersons after reviewing various development works across Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA) corporations.He said disorder had become the system in Bengaluru and that this needed to change. “Only when officials get their act together can we provide good governance. We have to improve the existing system. When officials perform their duties properly, citizens too will respond positively,” he said.The Minister added that instead of citizens having to visit government offices to resolve their problems, improved administration and functioning by officials should ensure issues are resolved on the spot. “I will hold a meeting at my level every month in this regard. In addition, the Additional Chief Secretary and Chief Commissioner will also hold meetings and issue specific directions,” he said.He directed officials to ensure that complaints registered on the Sahaaya platform are resolved promptly. “Only if complaints received from citizens are effectively addressed can we build their trust in us,” he said.So far, citizens have registered 75,152 complaints on the Sahaaya portal, of which 73,985 have been resolved, leaving 1,167 pending. Some complaints are taking longer to resolve. “I have directed officials to dispose of such complaints quickly without taking too much time. I have also asked them to review some of the issues that were resolved by senior officials and submit a report,” Mr. Gowda said.As citizens’ complaints are not being resolved quickly enough, officials have been instructed to make the necessary changes and upgrade the portal. Following a software upgrade, a consultation meeting will be held with citizens, after which the required changes will be incorporated and implemented, he added.Highlighting roadworks, Mr. Gowda said improvement projects are being taken up across the city. “Around 2,500 km of roads will undergo asphalting and white-topping works at a cost of ₹8,000 crore.” Furthermore, 840 km of stormwater drains exist within GBA limits, of which 640 km have already been developed. The remaining 200 km will be developed at a cost of ₹2,000 crore.Additionally, camera-mounted vehicles will start making rounds across the city from September to identify potholes.
