Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal confirmed on Thursday (August 27, 2026) that a group of 32 people from West Bengal who travelled for the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra remain untraceable following the devastating flash floods in Nepal.Nepal flash floods: Follow LIVE updates on August 27, 2026Among the 32, at least 21 are senior citizens, and many others are in their late 50s. Sharmistha Bhowmik Roy, the daughter-in-law of the deceased politician Mukul Roy, is also part of the group, along with two tour operators.“The Government of West Bengal is actively coordinating with the Embassy of India in Kathmandu and proper administrative channels,” Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari posted on social media. The group had booked their trip with Cholo Jai, a travel agency in West Bengal, and started from Kolkata on August 21. Samrat Travels, their partner company, handles the Nepal portion of the trip.Cholo Jai staff have not been able to establish contact with the group so far. The travel agency is working with the State and Central government authorities to assist with rescue and evacuation operations.According to Cholo Jai, the group left their hotel on Wednesday (August 26, 2026) morning and headed towards the border. On the morning of the disaster, the group reached the immigration office in Rasuwagadhi around 8.30 a.m. to cross into Tibet.According to the travel agency, the Kailash-Mansarovar Yatra is in high demand in West Bengal during this time.“Today morning, four managers from our company went there to get local information and further details about the rescue operations. We are constantly in touch with families,” Manish Singh, a staff of Cholo Jai told media persons. A family member of one of the missing women said his mother went on the trip alone and he has been unable to contact her. A senior citizen, who was supposed to go with this group, narrowly escaped the tragedy because her visa was rejected.A film crew from Bengal is also stuck in Nepal. They are in a safe zone and accessible by phone. Trinamool Congress chairperson Mamata Banerjee offered her condolences to the bereaved families and wished for the speedy recovery of the injured.
