Kolkata: A 32-member group of tourists from Bengal's, with tourists from Kolkata, Durgapur and Chandannagar, are missing in Nepal, all reportedly heading for Mansarovar Yatra, amid reports of 300 Indian nationals, with many pilgrims travelling to the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, have been reportedly missing following the devastating flash floods that struck the Himalayan nation of Nepal.The West Bengal Government has set up a 24×7 emergency control room to track people missing from the state and coordinate assistance and several helplines have been floated.West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari said that they are in touch with the Indian Embassy in Nepal. “We have received 32–33 calls in our control room which operated throughout the night and they are from Kolkata and Chandannagar. Several helpline numbers have been opened by West Bengal and Kolkata Police. Yesterday, the whole-night control room operated," Adhikari said on the sidelines of a programme.Adhikari stated that West Bengal stands in full solidarity with Nepal and asserted that the administrative channels are actively coordinating with the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu.Also read | 'Frankenstein' fears: Humans have some hope alive after allAmong the group, one is former TMC MLA Subhranshu Roy's wife Sharmistha Bhowmik Roy was also on his way to Kailash Manas Sarovar. Roy, son of deceased BJP MLA Mukul Roy, said his wife was 10 kms aways from the spot. “I have contacted the Nepal Embassy and Nabanna. Our two children are with me.”Several family members said many tourists were at the Nepal-China immigration centre before leaving for Manas Sarovar, when the flash flood struck.Others said the contact with the family members could not be established after 7.30-8PM.On the flood situation in Nepal, Deputy Consul General at the Consulate General of Nepal in Kolkata, Deepesh Lekhak told an agency that, “Significant damage occurred due to the flash floods along the Tibet-Nepal border. The Nepal Tourism Board has provided updates indicating that a total of 579 tourists are currently missing. Of these, 123 are Nepali citizens, while 406 are foreign nationals—including 105 Indians...”“However, there is data from Chinese immigration points—specifically the immigration offices on the Tibet border—where many people, including Indians from West Bengal and Kolkata, were present. While we cannot state the exact number yet, there is information about a group of 32 people from West Bengal. However, the actual figure could be higher, as no final data has been released yet,” Lekhak said.Adhikari stated that the exact number of missing people from West Bengal was being ascertained. However, around 30 plus people from the state have contacted the helpline number in the control room.Among the stranded include Tollywood actor Kharaj Mukherjee, who was in Nepal for a shooting, in Pokhara. I extend my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families.“Wishing a speedy recovery to the injured and hoping for the safe return of all those who remain missing, while rescue efforts continue to reach those who are stranded.The scale of destruction to homes, infrastructure and communities is deeply distressing. At this hour of profound loss, I stand in solidarity with the people of Nepal and commend everyone engaged in the ongoing rescue and relief efforts,” Banerjee said in her post.
