The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) announced that an oil tanker was struck by an “unknown projectile” and caught fire while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.
According to a statement issued by the organization early Thursday, August 27, local authorities reported the incident on Tuesday afternoon, August 25. However, the precise time of the impact has not been disclosed.
The incident occurred in Omani waters near the coastal city of Khasab. The resulting fire has been contained, and all crew members are reported safe. No reports of oil spills or environmental contamination have been issued to date.
The vessel’s name, flag state, origin, destination, and the specific type of projectile used remain unconfirmed. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the Islamic Republic has not issued an official comment.
The attack occurred amid ongoing diplomatic efforts to reopen shipping lanes through the Strait of Hormuz. Over recent days, Iran and Oman have held discussions regarding the creation of a temporary shipping corridor and joint mine-clearing operations in the waterway.
