Japanese charging infrastructure provider Terra Charge has announced plans to integrate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) into its network, starting in fiscal year 2028. By the end of fiscal year 2033, the company aims to deploy a total of 2,500 NACS charging points.
The new charging points will be installed gradually from 2028 at commercial sites, along key transport routes and at hotels. This expansion could significantly accelerate the adoption of the predominantly North American standard, which currently makes up a small minority of chargers in Japan. As of 19 August this year, Terra Charge reported 1,323 publicly registered NACS charging points nationwide. In total, Japan currently has around 68,000 charging points, most of which are the CHAdeMO standard, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.
The Japanese charging infrastructure company says its NACS chargers will not be limited to fast charging. Terra Charge is also exploring the development of a corresponding AC charger for locations with longer dwell times, such as hotels and multi-family residential buildings. A prototype is expected to be introduced as soon as possible, with a market launch to follow, but the company has not yet provided technical details or a concrete timeline.
