Carl Recine/Getty ImagesAug. 27, 2026 Updated 8:14 am EDTFormer Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has been the subject of a bankruptcy petition filed by His Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) over an unpaid tax bill.Carragher, who now works as a TV pundit for Sky Sports in the UK and CBS in the U.S., appeared on court on Wednesday after the case was brought by HMRC.A bankruptcy petition is an application to a court used to recover funds and, according to HMRC, is the “last resort” to chase unpaid taxes.HMRC does not comment on any individual cases due to a taxpayer confidentiality law but issued a statement to The Athletic when asked about Carragher’s situation.
“We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans. We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort,” an HMRC spokesperson said.Sources with knowledge of the situation expect the issue to be resolved quickly.Carragher, 48, spent 17 years playing in Liverpool’s first team, making a total of 737 appearances in a one-club career. Among his honours won were the 2005 Champions League and 2001 UEFA Cup.Carragher retired in 2013 but has since established himself as one of the most prominent pundits in the Premier League.
